PM launches three flagship schemes for urban rejuvenation


Prime Minister Narendra Modi today launched three programme to uplift the urban sector in the country. They are Housing for All in Urban areas, Smart Cities mission and the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) . Under the Housing for All scheme ,the centre plans to provide about 2 crore houses in cities in next seven years.

He also launched NDA governments flagship programme to create 100 smart cities which will have better infrastructure and better quality of life through a forty eight thousand crore rupees investment. The third programme is for Upgradation of urban infrastructure including providing drinking water, better transport and sewage management for 500 cities in a 50,000 crore rupees project. It has been named Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation , AMRUT.

Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister said that the housing for all scheme will ensure every urban poor is enabled to own a house. AMRUT will ensure that basic infrastructure and sanitation is in place in cities. For smart cities, the government will follow a bottom-up approach where the onus will be on local bodies rather than states or the Centre to develop them.

NDA projects on housing and urban renewal will replace similar initiatives by the UPA government such as the Rajiv Awas Yojana and the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. Through these programmes, the government seeks to promote slum free cities by providing the beneficiaries a central assistance from one lakh to two lakh thirty thousand rupees per house.

Smart Cities Mission

Smart Cities Mission is a 48,000 crore rupee project aimed at applying smart solutions to improve infrastructure and service delivery in the cities.
The central idea is to develop the overall quality of life for citizens and make these cities as role models for others to follow.

Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT)

AMRUT is the 50,000 crore project which is aimed at infrastructure development of 500 cities with population of over one lakh.
It ensures basic infrastructure like sanitation, drinking water, solid and waste management and transport.

Housing for All

This project will is aimed to provide decent houses to all the needy, particularly the economically weaker sections and low income group.
It will be taken up in 4041 notified towns across the country.
Target : To build 2 crore houses for urban poor with central assistance of Rs 1 lakh to Rs 2.3 lakh.
